Interpret Dream about Afterlife: Meaning of Afterlife Dreams

To dream about the afterlife can connect with trying to escape a hardship in this life. You want it to be over.

It can represent something you have been putting off. For example, people say they will do this or that when they get time or reach the next phase of life—after this phase of life. “I’ll start painting once my kids are grown,” or, “There will be plenty of time to travel later in life.” Perhaps it’s something that shouldn’t be put off.

Some dreams about afterlife address spiritual beliefs. People who strongly believe in an afterlife can dream about it as a way of processing information they receive, such as scriptures they read or sermons they hear.

People who don’t believe in an afterlife can be challenged by powerful and vivid dreams about it. Atheists have been known to become spiritual after having dreams that rearranged their notions and beliefs. It’s one thing to conceptualize something you have not experienced, and quite another to experience it fully and realistically in a dream.

It’s also possible to dream about deceased loved ones in the afterlife. It can symbolize something such as the hope that the person is “in a better place.” But you can also dream about deceased loved ones as a way of actually connecting with them in the afterlife. It’s an idea that will severely challenge people who think that death is the final end. It’s something that you have to experience for yourself—don’t take my word for it.

However, usually the afterlife is used as symbolism. For example, a man dreams about being in the afterlife and going to a sterile white office building. He waits to be told what his assignment will be. Everything is very orderly and subdued. A supervisor tells him that his job will be janitor. It’s upsetting but he figures he can work his way up.

The dream reflects a situation where the company he works for is being sold. The owner tells him he will be hired by another company owned by the same person, but his position will be entry-level. Being a janitor in the afterlife means he’s starting over and working his way up from the bottom. The dream sums up the situation and his feelings about it.

Notice his reaction. He’s willing to work his way up. That’s a good sign that he can accept his “demotion” with grace and apply himself fully to his new job. Sometimes, janitors end up running the company!

  1. Hi I dreamed me and 2 other were given things to do n receive before making it to the afterlife. We made it but unfortunately I was snatched back and never made it to the afterlife. What does this mean. We had missions and tasks to complete and a certain time and our last task was to retrieve a CD I retrieved it and as I joined them crossing over the man I retrieved the CD from snatched me back n neither of us made it to the afterlife. Somehow I think we were given another assignment but this time it was 4 of us n then I woke up. But I do remember feeling that the other felt and blamed me for us well them not making it to the afterlife

    1. Think of afterlife in the dream as symbolizing “the next stage of life (after this one).” Viewed in that light, the dream could be about trying to get to the next stage and what you need to do to make it (missions and tasks). The CD symbolizes what you need that’s missing. The symbolism of it could connect with its shape. A circle can mean “whole,” “complete,” or “full circle.” There could be something in you personally that’s not ready to move on. You could have a lesson to learn about yourself or life or all of the above.

A good sign is you go from a grouping of three people in the first scene, to a grouping of four in the second scene. Three in dreams can mean “something’s not complete about me — I’m missing something I need.” Four means “I have everything I need.” You are pulling up the inner resources you need to complete the “task” of moving on to the next stage of life, is my guess. Yes, good sign.

  2. I remember a lovely story from Marie-Louise von Fransz her book “On Dreams and Death”where a person who has no faith dreamed of a candle burning on the other side of the window, a sort of reassurance for the dreamer that there was indeed a life after death.
Back to the subject of your blog: dreams about deceased people: every once in a while a visitation dream is a warning you have the same disease as the person you dreamed about. I don’t mean to scare anyone, only to make sure that you inform yourself about symptoms and regularly check your body, because dreams can alert you in an early stadium of a disease. But this is indeed a literal meaning of such a dream and not a symbolic one.
You really gave a good overview of possible symbolism in those dreams, I appreciate your blog very much, thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you Susanne. Your heads-up about visitation dreams reminds me of the story of Amy Hardie, whose ex came to her in a dream to tell her she was going to die. He’d died of a lung disease, and sure enough, she soon developed similar health problems. She didn’t die, but she did go through a powerful personal transformation. She made a movie about the experience: http://www.pbs.org/pov/edgeofdreaming/
